Best Vinyl Siding Care Checklist

Severe weather during warmer months can do a number on the exterior of your home. The siding on your house is its first defense against high winds, hail, heavy rain, snow, and debris. If your siding is damaged in any way, cracks and gaps can form, providing entry points for moisture and animals.

As the weather warms up, it’s important to clean and inspect the siding to keep your home protected and looking beautiful.

  • Clean the vinyl siding. The seasons can blow dirt, dust, debris, and pollen onto your siding. Depending on your siding quality,  pollen can stain it and grime can trap moisture, causing mold and mildew growth. Start by using a clean cloth, sponge, or soft brush with mild detergent and water. Next, clean off the vinyl to make it look like new. To rinse off the soap, use water from your garden hose.
  • Check for signs of fading or chipping. Vinyl siding, like Certainteed Vinyl Siding, is built to prevent color fading from sun and exposure. The color permeates the entire material as opposed to being painted on. If you see that the color of your siding is starting to fade, it means more than just the color is getting lighter. This can also mean that your siding is getting worn down to the end of its life and might need to be replaced. If you find a chip or an imperfection in any of your siding, know that it can usually be fixed with a little bit of matching paint.
  • Check for weather damage. If you live in an area with blizzards, tornadoes, or other high-wind storms, there is a possibility for your vinyl siding to warp, disconnect from your house, and become displaced. Check for cracks, gaps, damage, or missing pieces. Repair and replace the siding as soon as you can to avoid further weather and water damage from coming inside your home.
  • Check for insect damage. Spring and summer months tend to be when swarms of termites come around that maybe attracted to your siding. Your first step is to get siding that specifically protects against termites and other bugs. You can also prevent them by rinsing down your siding on a regularly basis to keep the amount of moisture and pollen on your siding down. Cleaning the siding with soap and water, as mentioned above, will improve the exterior look and help keep it bug-free.
